Construction has started on the wall, and it looks like Mexico will be forced to pay for it after all.
Enrique Pena Nieto, the president of Mexico, has surrendered to President Trump. His back is against the wall, and he has been forced to turn to the leaders of other Latin American countries for help facing his “big challenges,” via Yahoo News.
President Trump is proving his deft negotiating skills. For months, Nieto has been acting tough, publicly insulting Trump and refusing to pay for the wall. Now, the Mexican president is giving in and is asking for “a new relationship” with America.
Mexico is hoping for the best in the renegotiation of NAFTA — the country has benefited immensely from the lopsided trade deal, and they don’t want to see it end.
Mexico is currently enjoying a $60 billion trade surplus with the United States, and 80 percent of Mexican exports are shipped to us.
President Trump ran on the promise of renegotiating NAFTA, which has been one of the worst trade deals negotiated in our history.
Among its many costs has been the loss of thousands of American manufacturing jobs. These were good stable jobs that dried up all because of the anti-business policies of many past administrations, especially Barack Obama’s.
To right this wrong, Trump is looking at many options to re-balance our trade situation with Mexico.
Placing a tax on Mexican imports is one option, which will generate money for us (perhaps to be put towards the wall) while encouraging companies who want to sell their goods in our country to return to our country. It’s only fair, and business leaders know this and have responded across the board. At this point, I’ve lost track of how many companies have promised to reinvest in our economy, move jobs back, and create new jobs within our borders.
It truly is an optimistic time for our economy. All of this success from Trump has surely been part of the reason President Nieto has backed down.
President Trump does not want to see Mexico fail. We want all of America’s allies to do well. Our affairs are tied together — think of how much their crime at our border affects our citizens.
President Nieto has made the right move here. By coming to the table, we can find a win-win solution. President Trump will continue to put Americans first, and the benefits of that are only going to keep growing.
